Post Election Commentary
A few thoughts: The Tea Party likely cost the Republicans the Senate and probably the White House as well. Demographics is destiny. Trying to cast President Obama, a slightly left of center pragmatist, as a demon socialist communist nazi Kenyan alien God-hater, was cognitively dissonant to a majority of Americans. Karl Rove will take his mega-million $$$ hate machine and live remorseless on easy street. The Big Lie Strategy did not work.................... A Supreme Court appointment or two should that happen during the next 4 years will change much....Roe v. Wade would likely remain as the law of the land and Citizens United could very well be revisited. Romney's tax returns will eventually prove that Harry Reid was right: Romney paid no taxes. President Obama will do well in crafting a compromise during the lame duck session of Congress and the country will continue to pull itself out of its economic doldrums. Europe will continue its anti-recovery program of austerity which will hold US gas prices down................ Later - Other thoughts: Theme song for Donald Trump, Sheldon Adelson, Karl Rove, and the Koch Brothers --- The Beatles' " Money Can't Buy Me Love".............. More thoughts -- possible lessons for Republicans: don't alienate women, minorities, Mexicans, Muslims, Gays, Lesbians, union workers, and people in the middle and lower income classes. Don't hide your money in the Cayman Islands. Pay your taxes. Stop living in an ideological bubble where you only listen to those who tell you what you want to hear, and stop denigrating facts, science, rational thinking, and knowledge. Stop nominating candidates who think the earth is 6,000 years old, flouride is a communist plot, the apocalypse is just around the corner, and think they speak for God. Running on Ignorance is a losing strategy. A campaign vowing not be influenced by "fact-checkers" might not always work. And finally, learn arithmetic..................... A prediction: Faux News will blame everything except their bad candidates and their bad ideas................... Republican strategies - The Big Lie - people turned out to not be so stupid as to believe it. - Voter Suppression - this strategy backfired and actually increased turnout for Obama -Obstruct all efforts to improve the economy -- people blamed George W. Bush for the economic collapse and wanted to voted to give President Obama more time to fix the problems and recognized that Republicans tried to stop him. - Gerrymandering - this one worked. Many Republican House Districts were redrawn to be easier wins for Republican Congressmen. With 32 Republican Governors now, this may continue................. Ann Coulter (who I still think is a guy) said if the Republicans nominate Mitt Romney, "we will lose." This is probably the only accurate thing she has ever said..................... Finally, I'm glad that President Obama won re-election because that means I'll still be able to use my President Obama coffee cup.
